Join a beginner-friendly Japanese ink painting class in NYC and learn Sumi-e through the graceful form of an orchid.
Sumi-e, or Japanese ink painting, is a quiet and focused practice using brush, water, sumi ink, and paper. In this class, students start with the basics of ink-wash painting, including how to hold a brush, then practice simple strokes to paint an orchid.
The class is led by Kohfu Furukawa, a New York-based visual artist originally from Japan whose work bridges traditional Japanese art and Western art. She brings years of experience in calligraphy and Sumi-e, along with a teaching approach shaped by working with students in New York cultural and educational settings.
Rather than trying to copy every detail, Sumi-e focuses on capturing the feeling and spirit of the subject. With a few intentional brushstrokes, you’ll explore how ink, water, pressure, and movement can create an expressive image.
No previous painting experience is needed. All materials, including ink, brushes, and calligraphy paper, are provided. Just bring yourself and enjoy a calm, hands-on introduction to Japanese Sumi-e painting.
