Create a traditional Japanese Kimekomi doll character in this hands-on craft class in NYC.
Kimekomi is a Japanese craft that uses silk and fabric to decorate a prepared wooden form, one piece at a time. In this workshop, you’ll learn how fabric is placed and carefully tucked into fine grooves carved into the wooden body, gradually building color, pattern, and a clean decorative surface.
This session begins with a choice of small Kimekomi designs. Learners can pick a Rabbit, Cat, or Heart form, then use the Kimekomi technique to create their finished doll. Each design has its own shape and personality, giving you a chance to explore the Kimekomi technique through a character that feels personal to you.
The class is beginner-friendly and open to all skill levels. No experience is necessary, and all materials are included. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll work at a relaxed pace and leave with a finished Kimekomi doll to bring home.
The workshop is taught by Keiko Fukuda, an artist and educator from Japan who founded Yume Cloud Studio to bring art into more everyday settings. Her teaching background includes traditional Japanese crafts, children’s art education, company workshops, and community-based art events.
The class also shares background on Kyugetsu, a long-established Japanese doll company founded in 1835. Kyugetsu is known for tradition-backed doll craftsmanship, giving students a glimpse into the history behind Japanese decorative doll making.
