Decorative Sushi Roll Making: Cat & Paw Print
Description
Join a decorative sushi roll class in NYC through Kazari Maki Zushi, Japan’s art of patterned sushi.
Kazari Maki Zushi turns rolled sushi into playful images and patterns. Using everyday ingredients and food-based colors, learners create small sushi “building blocks,” then assemble them into an image inside the roll. When the roll is sliced, the design appears in each piece.
Although the finished rolls can look detailed, the process is designed to be beginner-friendly. No sushi experience is needed, and the class is as much about the visual surprise as it is about taste. It’s a creative way to experience Japanese food culture through color, shape, and hands-on making.
Theme for this session: Cat & Paw Print
In this workshop, you’ll create Cat & Paw Print sushi rolls, including a cat face roll and a paw print roll.
This class is a good fit for food lovers, cat lovers, families, friends, and anyone looking for a fun creative cooking experience. You can enjoy your sushi during class or take your rolls home to share.
The workshop is taught by Hiroyo Belmonte, a native of Hokkaido, Japan. She has studied baking, pastry, and wagashi in Japan, completed bread technique training at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, and holds a Level 1 instructor certification in decorative sushi from the Japan Sushi Instructors Association.

This class has its own cancellation policy, which applies instead of the general DoBeDoUs policy where the terms differ. Cancellations made at least 72 hours before the class are eligible for a refund of the class price. Processing fees are non-refundable, and cancellations made within 72 hours of the class are not eligible for a refund. How It Works
- The class begins with a short introduction to Kazari Maki Zushi and the ingredients used for the day’s design
- Hiroyo will guide learners step by step as they build, assemble, and roll their sushi
- After the rolls are complete, learners will slice them open to reveal the decorative pattern inside
- Learners can enjoy their sushi during class or take the rolls home to share
Supplies And Materials
- All ingredients and tools are provided
- Nori seaweed: used to wrap and outline parts of the design
- Sushi rice: used as the base for the decorative rolls
- Beet powder: used to color the rice for the pink paw pads
- Black sesame seed: used to tint the rice for the cat’s coat
- Cheese stick: used for the cat’s eyes
- Yamagobo: pickled burdock root used for the cat’s nose
- Basic sushi-making and kitchen tools will be provided for assembling, rolling, and slicing

What To Bring
- Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy, or bring an apron
- Please keep nails short and remove rings and bracelets from your hands and wrists before class
- This session uses dairy and sesame. If you have a food allergy, please let us know in advance.
Cancellation Policy
We aim to be fair to both learners and instructors while ensuring artists and studios are paid for their work. This policy helps ensure instructors and studios are compensated for their time and preparation. We encourage learners to review class details carefully before booking and to reach out with any questions in advance.
Some classes have a class-specific cancellation, refund, or credit policy. If applicable, it will be listed in the class description and will apply where it differs from the general policy below. Please review the full class description before booking.
Tickets are refundable if canceled at least 7 days before the event. If you cancel, a cancellation fee equal to the payment processing cost for the transaction, approximately 3% of the booking total, will be deducted from your refund.
If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to give your ticket to a friend. Please have them check in using your name.
In the rare case that the event does not meet minimum participation requirements, we’ll contact ticket holders at least 48 hours in advance with the option to reschedule or receive a refund, excluding the nonrefundable payment processing cost.

- This workshop is also family-friendly. All ages are welcome, and it is recommended for ages 10 and up, with adult participation for younger learners.
