Learn Japanese decorative knot making in NYC through the traditional craft of mizuhiki.
Mizuhiki is made with fine paper cords that are aligned, bent, and tied into decorative forms. In Japan, this craft has long been connected to gifts, weddings, seasonal celebrations, and other special occasions, where the act of tying can express care, connection, and good wishes.
In this hands-on class, you’ll work with colorful mizuhiki cords and learn how simple knots can become delicate shapes, ornaments, accessories, or small artworks. As you work with color, texture, and form, you’ll experience mizuhiki as both a traditional Japanese craft and a creative practice for modern life.
Theme for this session: Woven Bracelet
In this workshop, you’ll weave mizuhiki paper cords into a lightweight bracelet, choosing your own combination of colors to make it personal. The finished bracelet can be worn as an everyday accessory or given as a handmade gift to someone special.
This class is beginner-friendly and open to all skill levels. No experience is necessary, and all materials are included. You’ll leave with your own mizuhiki piece to take home.
The workshop is taught by Satoi Adams, a mizuhiki artist based in Tokyo and New York. Her work brings mizuhiki into fashion, interior decor, workshops, exhibitions, schools, and community programs, sharing the craft as both a traditional art form and a creative practice for modern life.
