Discover Minhwa, traditional Korean folk painting, in a small, intimate studio class limited to just 2–4 learners. Led by Minhwa artist and educator Stephanie S. Lee, this hands-on class gives you plenty of individual guidance as you learn traditional painting techniques step by step.
Known for its vivid colors, symbolic imagery, and distinctive painting techniques, Minhwa often features animals, flowers, nature, and everyday objects that carry stories and cultural meaning.
For this class, you’ll pick one of two tiger designs to paint: the traditional Tiger & Magpie or the playful Big Grin Tiger, with its wide smile and bright white teeth.
You’ll work from a prepared drawing and practice traditional techniques including brush control, layering, color application, and barim, a shading technique used to create gradual transitions of color. No prior painting or Minhwa experience is needed.
With only 2–4 learners in each session, there’s time to work at a comfortable pace, ask questions, and receive individual guidance throughout the painting process. Tea is served during the class, creating a relaxed studio setting where you can slow down, paint, and learn more about Korean folk art.
PICK YOUR TIGER
Tiger & Magpie
A classic Minhwa pairing and one of the most recognizable subjects in Korean folk painting. This design combines the expressive tiger with the lively magpie in a traditional composition.
Big Grin Tiger
A playful tiger with an oversized grin and a full row of bright white teeth. Its cheerful expression brings humor and personality to the traditional tiger motif.
Whichever tiger you choose, Stephanie will guide you through the painting process step by step, helping you build color, shading, and detail as the image comes to life.
