MIG with a Mask: Learn Welding by Making a Small Metal Sculpture

Description

$280.00 2 Hours / Session Single Session Beginner In-Person Class Materials: Included

Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn

Learn the basics of MIG welding by creating a small metal sculpture in this beginner MIG welding class at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. No welding experience is required. Enrollment is limited to just two people, so you’ll receive plenty of individual help as you learn to set the machine, tack weld, and run a bead.

While learning these skills, you’ll create a unique small sculpture to take home. It might become a holder for jewelry or keys, a stand for a candle, a cradle for your phone, or something entirely your own. The possibilities are endless.

The class is taught by sculptor and Parsons educator Michelle Greene, who has experience teaching sculptors as well as welding certification courses for unions. Michelle designed this beginner MIG welding class as an empowering experience for people trying welding for the first time as well as those who have welded before.

You’ll also discuss the many ways MIG welding can be used beyond this first project, including sculpture, furniture, fabrication, and setting up a workspace of your own. The studio has a wall of open windows for ventilation while you work.

Participants under 18 must have parental permission.

What to Expect

  • Set up and use a MIG welding machine
  • Learn how to tack weld and run a bead on steel
  • Practice basic welding techniques while creating a small sculpture
  • Create a unique small sculpture to take home
  • Discuss the advantages of MIG welding for sculpture, furniture, fabrication, and future projects

How It Works

  • The class moves from an introduction to safety and equipment into demonstrations and guided hands-on work. You’ll have time to practice, develop your project, and get help as you work. At the end, you can review what you’ve made and talk about ways to continue exploring MIG welding.

Supplies And Materials

  • All metal and welding gear are provided. There is no additional materials charge.
  • Please come dressed in clothing and footwear appropriate for welding. See What to Bring below for clothing and footwear requirements.

Space and Atmosphere

  • Classes take place in Michelle’s working sculpture and welding studio inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The space has high ceilings and a wall of open windows with views toward the waterfront, providing ventilation while you work. Sculptures, metal, tools, and works in progress surround the teaching area, giving you the experience of learning inside an active artist’s studio.

What To Bring

  • If you wear glasses for reading, bring them. Glasses are recommended rather than contact lenses.
  • Wear or bring clothes you do not care about getting dirty or damaged. Welding sparks may leave small holes.
  • Wear or bring mostly cotton clothing: cotton socks, a cotton short- or long-sleeve shirt or T-shirt, and cotton dungarees or sturdy cotton jeans. Pants can be a blend, but should be mainly cotton.
  • Do not wear thin fabrics or ripped/distressed jeans with exposed knees.
  • Wear or bring closed-toe shoes appropriate for welding, such as leather or suede shoes, leather or suede sneakers, or boots.
  • Do not wear mesh shoes.
  • Do not wear valuable jewelry. You will need to remove it before welding.

Your Instructor

Michelle Greene is a sculptor and educator whose work explores movement through metal, transforming a rigid material into forms that can feel fluid, playful, and sometimes kinetic. Her sculpture has a contemporary, raw industrial quality, and she often repurposes objects or ideas from a community’s past into new forms.

Alongside her studio practice, Michelle has taught art and metal fabrication at several universities and currently teaches at Parsons. She brings that experience into small, hands-on classes at her working studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where students can learn welding and metalworking with close individual guidance.

Her classes are designed to make working with metal approachable, whether you are completely new to welding or already have some experience and want to build your skills through making.

What we love about this instructor

Teaching approach

Michelle brings the perspective of a practicing sculptor, public artist, and longtime educator directly into the class. Her public work includes Railrider’s Throne in the MTA permanent collection and projects created for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She is also a Part-time Associate Teaching Professor at Parsons, where she teaches Metal Fabrication.

Small Classes with Individual Attention

Classes are limited to just two students, giving Michelle time to work closely with each person as they learn the equipment, safety, and technique. The small format makes welding approachable for complete beginners while giving those with previous experience plenty of individual guidance.

A Real Working Sculpture Studio with a Waterfront View

You’ll learn in the Brooklyn Navy Yard studio where Michelle makes her own sculpture. High ceilings, open windows, metal, tools, works in progress, and views toward the waterfront make this feel unmistakably like a working artist’s space rather than a conventional classroom.
