This knife making class in NYC teaches you to grind, shape, and harden your own custom chef knife from a single steel bar, right in a professional workshop in Industry City, Brooklyn. No knife making experience is needed. Your instructor walks you through safety instruction before any hands-on work begins, then guides you step by step from there, and you will leave with a knife you actually use in your own kitchen, not just a keepsake.
You will spend the first part of the class shaping your blade's profile and cutting edge using hand and power tools, working the steel down piece by piece. Then comes the part that surprises most first timers: your blade goes into a forge and gets quenched in oil to harden the steel. That part can sound intense if you have never stood near a forge before, but it is one of the most satisfying moments of the class, watching raw steel turn into something that rivals the knives you would find in a kitchen store.
You will also get to choose your own design, whether that is a classic chef knife, a vegetable slicer, a mini cleaver, an all purpose Santoku, or a Bowie knife for your next hunting trip, and size the handle so it fits your own hand. Once your blade is polished and your handle is shaped from brass pinned hardwood, you will sharpen the edge yourself and apply a protective finish to the handle, so the knife is ready to use as soon as you get it home. It is safe to use directly with food. From that first meal you cook with it, it stops being a class project and starts being the knife you actually reach for in your own kitchen.

This class has its own cancellation and refund policy, which applies instead of the general DoBeDoUs policy where the terms differ. Cancellations made at least 7 days before the class are eligible for a full refund of all amounts paid, including the processing fee, or full credit toward a future class with the same provider. Cancellations made between 7 days and 48 hours before the class are eligible for 50% credit toward a future class. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the class are not eligible for a refund or credit. Tickets are refundable if canceled at least 7 days before the event. If you cancel, a cancellation fee equal to the payment processing cost for the transaction, approximately 3% of the booking total, will be deducted from your refund.
If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to give your ticket to a friend. Please have them check in using your name.
In the rare case that the event does not meet minimum participation requirements, we’ll contact ticket holders at least 48 hours in advance with the option to reschedule or receive a refund, excluding the nonrefundable payment processing cost.

This hands-on maker studio in Brooklyn’s Industry City helps beginners learn woodworking, welding, leathercraft, stained glass, and other practical crafts. Since 2015, its workshops have made real tools and unfamiliar materials feel approachable, with step-by-step guidance and a finished object to take home.
Classes are taught by local makers, artists, and designers in a spacious, well-equipped workshop designed for hands-on learning. The experience is practical, encouraging, and well suited for trying a new skill, planning a creative day with friends, or finding an unusual Brooklyn activity.
Please arrive about 10 minutes before the class starts so you can settle in comfortably.
