Discover Minhwa, traditional Korean folk painting, through a calm, hands-on painting experience with artist and teaching artist Stephanie S. Lee.
Known for its vivid colors, symbolic imagery, and distinctive painting techniques, Minhwa often features animals, flowers, nature, and objects that carry stories and cultural meaning. Stephanie introduces the tradition in an approachable way while guiding you through the painting process step by step.
You’ll work from a prepared design and practice traditional techniques including brush control, layering, color application, and barim, a shading technique used to create gradual transitions of color. No prior painting or Minhwa experience is needed.
Tea and light refreshments are included, creating a relaxed setting where you can slow down, paint, and learn more about Korean folk art.
Theme for this session: Tiger & Magpie with Peony
In this session, you’ll paint a colorful Tiger and Magpie with Peony composition on traditional Korean paper.
Tiger and magpie imagery is one of the most recognizable subjects in Korean folk painting. The animals are often depicted with personality and humor, while the peony adds rich color and traditional symbolism to the composition.
Using a prepared drawing, you’ll build the painting through color, layering, brushwork, and shading. At the end of the session, you’ll leave with your completed Minhwa artwork.

Pricing is based on the final group size:
Groups of 6–8: $80 per person
Groups of 9–14: $75 per person
Groups of 15 or more: Custom group pricing is available based on the size and needs of your event. Submit the private class request form, and we’ll put together the right setup and pricing for your group.
This private class is offered at your location or at a venue arranged by DoBeDoUs.
An additional transportation fee may apply depending on the location and transportation needs. Any additional costs will be confirmed in advance.
Our private class request form does not currently calculate group rates or transportation costs automatically. After you submit your request, DoBeDoUs will confirm the final group size, any customization needs, any applicable transportation fee, and the total price before the booking is finalized.
We aim to be fair to both learners and instructors while ensuring artists and studios are paid for their work. This policy helps ensure instructors and studios are compensated for their time and preparation. We encourage learners to review class details carefully before booking and to reach out with any questions in advance.
Some classes have a class-specific cancellation, refund, or credit policy. If applicable, it will be listed in the class description and will apply where it differs from the general policy below. Please review the full class description before booking.
Tickets are refundable if canceled at least 7 days before the event. If you cancel, a cancellation fee equal to the payment processing cost for the transaction, approximately 3% of the booking total, will be deducted from your refund.
If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to give your ticket to a friend. Please have them check in using your name.
In the rare case that the event does not meet minimum participation requirements, we’ll contact ticket holders at least 48 hours in advance with the option to reschedule or receive a refund, excluding the nonrefundable payment processing cost.

Korean Folk Art, Inc. is led by Stephanie S. Lee, Founder and Lead Teaching Artist, a Queens-based visual artist and educator with studios in Queens and Brooklyn. She is dedicated to sharing Minhwa, the tradition of Korean folk painting, with contemporary audiences.
Through beginner-friendly workshops, Lee introduces students to step-by-step painting techniques while sharing the cultural stories behind each image. The classes are warm, calm, and supportive, making Minhwa accessible for adults, families, seniors, and learners of all experience levels.
Lee is a NYC DOE-registered teaching artist and a teaching artist with the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts. She has taught through museums, libraries, schools, cultural organizations, and public programs across the United States.
Her artwork has been exhibited in Korea and New York, as well as at Korean Cultural Centers in Paris and Washington, D.C. Her work has also been selected twice for the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. She holds a BFA and MS from Pratt Institute.
Please arrive about 10 minutes before the class starts so you can settle in comfortably.

Classes take place in a dedicated classroom within a clean, well-maintained artist’s home studio. The setting feels quiet, and welcoming, giving students a comfortable place to slow down, paint, and enjoy the creative process.
