Join a college essay workshop in Gowanus, Brooklyn, designed to help high school juniors and seniors turn personal experiences into clear, engaging application essays.
Through guided prompts, close reading, discussion, and workshop feedback, students will develop the storytelling, reflection, and revision skills needed to write strong college essays and personal statements. They will learn how to identify experiences worth exploring, shape them into engaging narratives, and communicate their individuality with clarity and honesty.
The class emphasizes voice, structure, specificity, and revision while creating a supportive environment where students can experiment, take creative risks, and gain confidence in their writing. Students may bring an existing draft or use the session to generate new ideas and material.
The instructor has helped students craft compelling essays for successful applications to Harvard Law, The Fuqua School of Business at Duke, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Yale, the University of Chicago, McGill, Brown, Columbia, University of California schools, and Boston College.
We aim to be fair to both learners and instructors while ensuring artists and studios are paid for their work. This policy helps ensure instructors and studios are compensated for their time and preparation. We encourage learners to review class details carefully before booking and to reach out with any questions in advance.
Some classes have a class-specific cancellation, refund, or credit policy. If applicable, it will be listed in the class description and will apply where it differs from the general policy below. Please review the full class description before booking.
Tickets are refundable if canceled at least 7 days before the event. If you cancel, a cancellation fee equal to the payment processing cost for the transaction, approximately 3% of the booking total, will be deducted from your refund.
If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to give your ticket to a friend. Please have them check in using your name.
In the rare case that the event does not meet minimum participation requirements, we’ll contact ticket holders at least 48 hours in advance with the option to reschedule or receive a refund, excluding the nonrefundable payment processing cost.

Operating as a co-working space for writers of all persuasions and stages in their careers to come practice their craft & teach their practice, The Writer’s Gym aims to nurture an inclusive community—even if you’re not quite persuaded you are a writer (yet)—around the written word and to spread the joyful practice of weaving them into and out of the social fabric of our peculiarly solitary lives.
Please arrive about 10 minutes before the class starts so you can settle in comfortably.
After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with directions and any important details for the class.

The Writer's Gym
Led by Grant Koo, The Writer’s Gym prioritizes maintaining a consistent writing practice over the pressure to publish. His workshops offer the gift of feedback through in-depth conversations about form, style, and craft, while creating space for the kind of self-insight learners have compared to group therapy. For those interested in taking work further, his literary quarterly can also serve as a possible publishing path.
Classes feel personable, encouraging, and open to writers at different stages, including people who are not sure they are “writers” yet. Through guided discussion, feedback, and creative prompts, learners are invited to share ideas, notice what their writing is trying to say, and gain insight into both their work and themselves.
This comfortable, art-filled setting offers room to write, gather, and exchange ideas. With shared work areas, private desks, inviting seating, and a kitchen, the space feels warm and communal while still giving writers the quiet and breathing room their practice needs.
